The former striker’s comments on the 2010 Roma-Sampdoria match that cost the Giallorossi the Scudetto: “Francesco spoke to me before the game and made a joke… I left the stadium in my underwear.” And Roma fans are calling him ungrateful
“I made Totti and the Roma fans cry. And I enjoyed it like crazy.” Cassano’s latest outburst has infuriated the Giallorossi fanbase, which is currently flooding social media and radio with harsh comments directed at the former Bari Vecchia star. Cassano’s remarks, made during the Viva El Futbol broadcast, concern a match that is well remembered in the capital. It was the Roma-Sampdoria game that ended 1-2 (with a brace by Pazzini) in favor of the Ligurians on April 25, 2010. That defeat dashed hopes of winning the Giallorossi’s fourth Scudetto after an incredible comeback against Mourinho’s Inter. Cassano was Sampdoria’s star and had played five seasons with the Giallorossi, with his fair share of ups and downs.
“Before that match, my friend Vito Scala told me that Totti wanted to talk to me,” Cassano recounts, clarifying that the tone of that conversation was purely playful, just some friendly banter and nothing more. “I went to see ‘Il Pupone,’ who started telling me we were having a great season, asking me about my family and things like that. I tell him: ‘Get to the point—what do you want to tell me? Come on, don’t give me s***.’ The second part of the story builds: ‘And he says to me: “Ah… you know… if we happen to win today’s game, you can count on winning the other three. You’re going to the Champions League anyway.”’ A joke that Antonio didn’t take well. “I replied,” Cassano continues, “I get it… Today I’m telling you I’ll win the last four games. Today I’m going to make you lose the Scudetto and make you cry—most of all, I’m going to make the people cry who insulted me like a dog when I left here. The game went exactly as I wanted. It ended 2-1 for us.”
FANS’ FURY— At that point, Adani and Ventola intervened, emphasizing that “Francesco was clearly joking.” Cassano confirms this but gets another thing off his chest. “Yes, Francesco’s was a joke; he brushed it off as if to say: ‘Come on, you’ll win the last three anyway.’ I say no, you don’t get it—I need them… I’m going to the Champions League and I’ll win the last four, but even if I don’t need them, I’ll win anyway because today I’m going to make you cry, and that’s exactly what happened. I walked out of the stadium in my underwear, I was enjoying myself like crazy.” An exaggerated description, typical of Cassano’s character. Which has infuriated Roma fans in recent hours. The milder accusation is that he’s “ungrateful,” considering how much Totti did for Cassano during his time at Roma. Obviously, the comments reached the former captain’s ears, and while he certainly didn’t appreciate them, he made it clear he didn’t want to respond to the provocation. After all, Francesco knows Cassano’s antics all too well.
