The world number 2 takes to the court against Gaston at 9 a.m.: the match will be broadcast exclusively on Eurosport, available on Dazn, Timvision, and Discovery+, as well as on the new HBO Max platform. Lorenzo faces Collignon at 1:30 a.m. Sonego and Darderi are also in action.
Finally, it’s Jannik Sinner’s turn. The Italian, world No. 2 and two-time defending champion at the Australian Open, will begin his campaign for a historic hat trick (he would be only the second in the Open Era after Djokovic 2019-2021) on Tuesday, January 20. Officially announced in the published schedule, Jannik’s debut is set for 9 a.m. Italian time, the first match of the evening session at Rod Laver Arena, against Hugo Gaston. Where can you watch Sinner’s match? The match, like all Australian Open matches, will be broadcast exclusively on Eurosport, available on Dazn, Timvision, and Discovery+, as well as on the new HBO Max platform. Sinner has won both previous matches against the Frenchman, albeit dating back to 2021, on the indoor court in Marseille and on the hard court in Miami. But before the big contender for the final victory, there will be plenty of Italian tennis to enjoy, both on the main and secondary courts.
Lorenzo Musetti, world No. 5, will open his Australian Open against Raphael Collignon. The two will play the first match of the day session at 1:30 a.m. Italian time on Margaret Court Arena. With no previous encounters between them, the Italian is looking for the only Slam quarterfinal still missing in his career. Shortly before him, Luciano Darderi will take to the court for his first match on 1573 Arena at 1:00 a.m. against Cristian Garin. The No. 22 seed will play at the same time as Lorenzo Sonego, who faces Carlos Taberner on Court 13 in a match that could determine Musetti’s opponent in the second round. Luca Nardi will be in action on Court 7 against Yibing Wu in the third match at 1:00 a.m., with Errani and Paolini opening the court’s schedule in doubles against Lumsden/Tang. Completing the Italian contingent, the only Italian in the women’s singles alongside Jasmine, is Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who will play the second match from 1:00 p.m. on court 15, at around 2:30 p.m., against Julia Grabher.
THE BIG NAMES— The third day of first rounds will complete the parade of the world’s best players. At 1:30 p.m. on Rod Laver Arena, defending champion Madison Keys will open against Ukraine’s Olinykova. This will be followed by one of the most interesting first rounds, between left-handers Ben Shelton, world No. 8, and Ugo Humbert, fresh from the final in Adelaide. The day will end, after Sinner, with Naomi Osaka against Antonia Ruzic. There are also big names on Margaret Court, with two of the most dangerous players in the women’s draw. Elena Rybakina, No. 5 in the WTA rankings, will face Kaja Juvan immediately after Musetti, while Belinda Bencic, No. 10, will open the evening session (9:00 a.m. Italian time) against Katie Boulter. The Swiss player is coming off victories in the United Cup and the satisfaction of being the third player to return to the top 10 after giving birth, along with Clijsters and Serena Williams. Stefanos Tsitsipas, finalist in 2023, will close against Shintaro Mochizuki. Among the matches of the day, Dimitrov-Machac, last on the Kia Arena in the middle of the Italian morning, and Prizmic-Duckworth, third match on Court 6, are worth mentioning. The winner would be Sinner’s possible opponent in the second round.
