Win or fly

The joy of simply having qualified for the Olympic Games was extremely great for the German women’s handball team. When their thoughts became clearer again afterwards, it became clear that Markus Gaugisch’s team is also traveling to Paris with certain ambitions. Our Germany vs Slovenia betting tip proves that the trip to France could be over sooner than the ladies would like

Two matchdays have been played in this Group A of the women’s handball tournament and the only team still without points is Germany. Sweden are top of the table with 4:0 points. Norway, Denmark, Slovenia and South Korea each have 2:2 points. We could now put forward many theories about the DHB women having to score points against the favored teams from Norway or Denmark, but that is all still out of reach at the moment.

First of all, they have to win against Slovenia on Tuesday. If we assume that the three medal contenders from Northern Europe win everything against the other three teams, then we have a clear constellation. In the duel between Germany and Slovenia, the prediction of a German victory must be correct. Then Slovenia, the DHB women and South Korea could all end up with one win and one defeat in the three-way tie.

Markus Gaugisch’s team would need a five-goal win against Slovenia at the Expo Porte de Versailles on Tuesday. A win would at least put them back in the running for a place in the quarter-finals. If this handicap victory does not work out, all dreams could be shattered

Germany – statistics & current form

It really looked as if the German women’s handball team would cause a sensation on their comeback to the Olympic stage. Now we know that it will be extremely difficult to reach the quarter-finals and, should they succeed, the absolute gold favorites, the hosts France, will probably be waiting there. That’s not a good outlook for the rest of the tournament

Strong in preparation, failures in Paris

But first they have to win the match against Slovenia early on Tuesday morning. This shows what all the matches in preparation are really worth. Markus Gaugisch’s team set off for France with ten wins from eleven international matches. They have now lost three of their last five games and, even worse, lost both matches in Paris

Of course, nobody expected them to lose their opening game against South Korea. Perhaps it was the limited attacking options, perhaps the mental state was not right. An 18:14 lead cannot be squandered against such an underdog. Nevertheless, it has to be said that the German women have by no means given up.

They were already seven goals down at the break against the very strong Swedes, but then started to catch up in the second half and got closer and closer. It wasn’t enough in the end, but this second half and the 28:31 defeat should be a source of encouragement and that’s why we’re mainly looking at the odds for a German victory in the match between Germany and Slovenia.

Predicted line-up for Germany:

  • Goal: Wachter, Filter
  • Back line: Grijseels, Smits, Bölk, Lott, Maidhof, Leuchter
  • Left wing: Döll, Stockschläder
  • Right wing: Behrend
  • Circle: Schmelzer, Antl, Behnke
  • Trainer: Gaugisch

Slovenia – Statistics & current form

The Slovenian women have finished eighth at best at the European and World Championships. The women from Slovenia are currently making their debut at the Olympic Games. All in all, these historic rankings mean that this Slovenian team is anything but a major power in handball. And yet it is a team that is definitely dangerous

Almost everything runs through Ana Gros

A large part of the Slovenian selection plays together at RK Krim. The team of Montenegrin coach Dragan Adzic is therefore very well-rehearsed and the automatisms work, but this team is still relatively easy to count out. Top star Ana Gros, who has scored almost 800 goals in over 150 international matches, plays a major role.

So if the German team succeeds in taking the only world-class Slovenian player out of the game, then we would also predict a bigger handicap between Germany and Slovenia. There is plenty of evidence of how this works, as the Slovenians have lost three of their last four international matches.

At the Olympic Games in Paris, Slovenia also conceded a clear eight-goal defeat against Denmark. However, Dragan Adzic’s team were unimpressed in their second match against South Korea, winning by a clear seven-goal margin. The task for the German women would be a little easier on Tuesday if the Slovenians had scored two or three goals less.

Predicted line-up of Slovenia:

  • Goal: Vojnovic, Pandzic
  • Back line: Omoregie, Spreitzer, Stanko, Abina, Gros, Lazovic
  • Left wing: Svetik, Abina, Mavsar
  • Right wing: Varagic
  • Circle: Klemencic, Ljepoja
  • Coach: Adzic

Germany – Slovenia head-to-head comparison / H2H result

There are plenty of encouraging signs for the German women ahead of this landmark game on Tuesday. The direct comparison is one of them, as there have been four duels between Germany and Slovenia to date and the DHB ladies have won all four matches. A win now in Paris would be extremely important.

The last duel was less than four months ago. The German women won 31:25 at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Neu-Ulm and a victory of this magnitude would be worth its weight in gold in Paris. At the time, the German team could not get a grip on Ana Gros, who scored eleven goals alone, but managed to largely isolate the eloquent backcourt player from her teammates

Germany – Slovenia betting tip

It’s all to play for for the German women on Tuesday. A defeat is tantamount to early elimination after the preliminary round. They could then enjoy life in the Olympics a little longer, play two games and then leave. However, that is not the aim for Markus Gaugisch’s team. There is still a chance of reaching the quarter-finals.

But there is no way around the fact that they need a big win against Slovenia. It has to be a five-goal difference. The DHB women have already won the qualifying tournament this year by six goals against Dragan Adzic’s team. That’s why we can imagine placing a bet on a handicap victory for the German women in the Bwin app between Germany and Slovenia

Whether it will be enough to push past South Korea and Slovenia in a possible three-way tie remains to be seen. We reckon that there will at least be a lot of goals. When Ana Gros is on the scoresheet, a few goals are actually obligatory. In the end, however, we have decided to play the odds on a German handicap win (-3.5 goals) between Germany and Slovenia
