Will the Colchoneros stay on the heels of their city rivals?

After a strong run of 13 straight league games without defeat (ten wins, three draws) and a stellar haul of 33 points out of a possible 39, Atletico Madrid caught a 1-0 defeat at FC Barcelona on Sunday.

The Colchoneros still remain on course for the Champions League, but now face another fearful opponent, so Atletico Madrid vs Mallorca is a bold bet for a home win for the Rojiblancos.

The last three league games between the two clubs have all gone to the Bermellones, who also took the full three points in their last visit to the Estadio Metropolitano (2-1). The Mallorcans are also in good form, picking up eight points out of a possible 12 from their last four games, which is something to take into account in Atletico Madrid vs Mallorca predictions.

Generally, we do see Atletico Madrid in the favorite role, especially since the Colchoneros are also the third best home team in La Liga. However, in view of the very low prices offered for tip 1, there is absolutely no value to be found in betting on a home win for the Madrilenians. Therefore, it is all the more coherent to switch to the under bet, which takes into account the defensive qualities of both teams.

While Atletico have only conceded six goals in their last 13 competitive matches, the Bermellones have also played to nil twice while conceding four goals in their last four league games.

Atletico Madrid – statistics & current form

After Atletico Madrid disappointed all along the line in the 2022/23 season internationally and was completely eliminated in the Champions League as group last even before the World Cup break, there was also one or the other disappointment at national level in the new year.

In the Copa del Rey, the Colchoneros lost to their city rivals Real Madrid in the quarterfinals, while in La Liga even the Champions League starting spot seemed to be in jeopardy for a while. Then, however, the Rojiblancos bounced back in fine form.

The unbeaten streak snapped in Barcelona

Most recently, Diego Simeone’s side went unbeaten in 13 consecutive league games (ten wins, three draws), collecting 33 points out of a possible 39 and even attacking city rivals Real Madrid once again.

Then, however, after six straight wins, the Colchoneros lost their away game at FC Barcelona on Sunday, widening the gap to second place back to five points. However, they are a comfortable twelve points clear of fifth place at least, which should make qualification for the Champions League very safe with eight matchdays to go in the season.

The second best defense in La Liga

Once again, the Rojiblancos’ showpiece in the 2022/23 season was their defense, which allowed just 22 goals conceded in 30 league games – second best behind Barcelona. In this context, our prediction of a low-scoring game at Atletico Madrid against Mallorca is correspondingly coherent.

In addition to its defensive compactness, the capital club also has a fundamental home advantage. There have been three defeats in the 15 La Liga home games at the Estadio Metropolitano. Overall, however, only Barcelona (twelve) and Real Madrid (ten) have recorded more home league wins than the Colchoneros (nine).

Mallorca – Statistics & current form

Real Club Deportivo Mallorca once managed to win the Copa del Rey in 2003, but went through several highly complicated years in the last decade. In 2017/18, the Bermellones even played only in the third division before returning to La Liga after two promotions in a row and a total absence of six years.

There, the Pirates were not able to hold on right away. However, after another relegation and direct re-promotion, things are looking good for the Mallorcans at the moment. After finishing 16th in the final table of 2021/22, Javier Aguirre’s squad currently has a place in the secure midfield on the record.

Haven’t lost in four league games

Recently, RCD Mallorca picked up eight points out of a possible twelve again, celebrating two wins in a row against Celta Vigo (1-0) and Getafe (3-1). With 40 points, the Bermellones are in tenth place in the table and are currently less points behind an international starting spot (six) than they are ahead of the first relegation spot (ten).

The Pirates can go into the away game at the Rojiblancos, against whom coach Javier Aguirre seems to have just the right antidote, with no worries. The Mallorcans have won all three of their league games against Atletico Madrid under the Mexican’s leadership.

The fifth most away defeats in La Liga

Nevertheless, the odds are clearly against the Bermellones winning a point in Atletico Madrid vs Mallorca, which is also due to the fact that there have only been four wins away from home from 15 La Liga matches in the 2022/23 season.

With 15 points, the Mallorcans occupy twelfth place in the away table. However, only Elche (eleven), Almería, Valencia and Real Valladolid (ten each) have more away defeats than Mallorca (eight), which means they will need an impeccable defensive performance to win a point.

Atletico Madrid – Mallorca Direct comparison / H2H balance

Head to head: 27 – 14 – 17

There have been a total of 58 meetings between the two teams so far and Atletico Madrid leads the direct comparison with 27 wins. Recently, however, the Bermellones clearly caught up. The last three encounters between the two teams in La Liga have all gone to RCD Mallorca – including the last guest appearance at the Estadio Metropolitano (2-1).

Atletico Madrid – Mallorca tip

Atletico Madrid vs Mallorca betting odds are swinging in all forms in the direction of the Rojiblancos, who have however lost all of their last three league games against the Mallorcans. Accordingly, a lot of risk resonates with the favorite bet, especially since on the one hand, the undefeated streak of the Colchoneros just broke, while on the other hand, RCD Mallorca has not lost any of the last four league games (two wins, two draws) and arrives quite strong form.

Both teams have a very compact defense, which the opponent must first crack. Accordingly, a lot of value can be found in Atletico Madrid vs Mallorca betting on a maximum of two goals in this duel, which has always been the case in five of their last seven duels.
