Will the Béticos thwart the Rojiblancos’ dreams of a title?

It was just six weeks ago when Sevilla and Betis Sevilla met for the Derbi Sevillano in the Copa del Rey round of 16. The scandalous match was abandoned when Jordán was hit by a thrown plastic pole. The Verdiblancos then pulled off a surprise in the sequel, knocking their city rivals out of the competition 2-1.

The pairing is once again extremely explosive, as both teams are currently doing extremely well in the league. In terms of the standings, the current runners-up are hosting the third-placed team. In the run-up to the derby between Sevilla and Betis Sevilla, the odds are swinging in favour of the home side.

During the week, both teams only did what was necessary to enter the round of 16 and thus retained the necessary energy for “El Gran Derbi” (the big derby). We think the visitors have a better chance than they have had in a long time of beating the Rojiblancos again.

Sevilla – Statistics & current form

Since the first and so far only Spanish championship in 1946, Sevilla FC’s longing for the highest title in national football has been extremely strong. Especially because the Rojiblancos have already won the Europa League six times in the current millennium alone, they finally want to end their drought in La Liga.

The Nervionenses have not been this close for a long time. After 25 league games, Julen Lopetegui’s team are in second place, six points behind Real Madrid.

Won only one of last five league games

It was all the more bitter for the Rojiblancos that, after the aforementioned cup defeat by arch-rivals Real Betis, they had lost their way in the league. Although the Nervionenses remained unbeaten for five matchdays, they only managed to pick up seven points out of a possible 15 with four draws.

The Andalusians will go into this all-important city duel suitably ticked off, and the Europa League record winners, who advanced in their favourite competition last week after a 3-1 first-leg win with a 1-0 defeat at Dinamo Zagreb, cannot afford to drop any more points under any circumstances.

Haven’t lost any of their twelve home league games yet

The Rojiblancos’ strong home record at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán is a particular point in their favour. The Nervionenses have not lost a single one of their twelve home games in the 2021/22 season (nine wins, three draws) and thus also occupy second place in the home table behind leaders Real Madrid.

Accordingly, Lopetegui’s team will be favourites in the city derby against the Béticos, against whom they have won five of their last six home games.

Betis Sevilla – Statistics & current form

Real Betis are perceived to be merely number two in the Andalusian capital of Sevilla. However, the Verdiblancos actually won the national championship in Spain eleven years before the great Sevilla FC.

Since winning the title in 1935, however, the Béticos have never again made it to the top of La Liga. In three of the last 13 seasons, the traditional club even only played in the second division, before a clear upward trend has become apparent since the signing of Manuel Pellegrini as coach.

Won 14 of 25 league games

Betis Sevilla entered the Europa League in sixth place in pre-season, where the Verdiblancos secured second place in Group G behind Bayer Leverkusen. They then finished the job against St Petersburg during the week, progressing to the last 16 with a goalless draw after winning 3-2 away in Russia.

Meanwhile, the Béticos are even on course for Champions League glory in league action. Real Betis have already won 14 of their 25 league games, giving the third-placed team a four-point lead over chasing Atlético Madrid.

La Liga’s second best offence

The Verdiblancos are particularly dangerous offensively, scoring 47 goals from 25 league games, which is not only ten more than their city rivals, but also the second best attack in La Liga.

Considering that the Béticos also have the second most away wins in La Liga, the chances are anything but bad that they will be able to annoy the Rojiblancos in league action after their victory in the Copa del Rey. Accordingly, it is interesting to bet on an away win for the Pellegrini team in Sevilla against Betis Sevilla.

Predicted line-up of Betis Sevilla:
Silva – Moreno – Ruíz – Bartra – Bellerín – Carvalho – Rodríguez – Juanmi – Fekir – Canales – Iglesias

Sevilla – Betis Sevilla Direct comparison / H2H balance

Head to head: 64 – 32 – 40

The Derbi Sevillano has been played 136 times and Sevilla FC, who also won the first leg 2-0, still have the lead with 64 victories. Most recently, however, Real Betis upset their city rivals in the Copa del Rey, where they celebrated a 2-1 victory over the Rojiblancos.

Sevilla – Betis Sevilla Tip

When it comes to Sevilla vs Betis Sevilla, the prediction does tend to go in favour of the home side, who are still unbeaten in league action at home. However, the in-form Verdiblancos have a good chance of beating their city rivals in the championship. Real Betis have lost just three of their last 17 away games and bring with them La Liga’s second-best attack, while the Rojiblancos have won just one of their last five league games.

While the direct bet on the Béticos does represent a certain risk. From a mathematical point of view, however, it makes a lot of sense, because according to the forecast, Real Betis’ chances of an away win in the Derbi Sevillano have not been this good for a long time.
