Will VfL make it through to the top flight?
Wolfsburg vs. Lille is a thrilling clash to close out Group G. The home side are currently in first place. The home side are currently in last place, but still have a chance of staying in the top flight with a win. The Northern French, for their part, travel to the tournament as the leaders. A draw would be enough for them to reach the play-offs.
An advantageous starting position, which the “Great Danes” only earned in the last two rounds of matches with victories against Sevilla and RB Salzburg. The forecast for the clash between Wolfsburg and Lille at the Volkswagen Arena is less than three goals.
Wolfsburg – Statistics & current form
The Lower Saxons will be banking on the home bonus in this encounter. The two previous home games were not lost. Instead, a 1-1 draw was recorded against Sevilla and RB Salzburg were defeated 2-1. Four of the five points were won on home soil.
In contrast, home strength cannot be determined in the Bundesliga: Three of the last four games in front of their own backdrop ended in defeat.
Nmecha is more convincing internationally than Weghorst
In the offensive, hopes currently lie more on Lukas Nmecha and not on Wout Weghorst. The Dutchman has been scoring goals in the Bundesliga, but recently his form in the league has shown a downward trend and in the Champions League he has been a pale shadow. He has yet to score in four appearances.
Lucas Nmecha has been much better. The youngster has already scored twice in the group phase, including the winning goal in the last match against Salzburg.
The effect of the change of coach has long since fizzled out
Coach Florian Kohfeldt, who took over at the end of October, can also no longer be satisfied with his record so far. Three of the seven completed matches in league play and Champions League under his direction ended with a victory.
Kohfeldt won his first three competitive matches as the new manager of the Wolves, but since then he has not won another match (0-1-3). The dress rehearsal last weekend also ended in disappointment with a clear 3-0 defeat at Mainz.
At least Koen Casteels will be back in the Wolves’ box after recovering from illness, which means that the only partially convincing substitute Pervan will be back on the bench.
Predicted Wolfsburg line-up:
Casteels – Brooks – Guilavogui – Lacroix – Baku – Arnold – Vranckx – Roussillon – Nmecha – Lukebakio – Weghorst

Lille – Statistics & current form
Lille have earned their place at the top of the table primarily through their strong defence. The French champions have conceded only three goals and have kept three clean sheets. Chelsea are the only team to top this tally with four games without conceding a goal. In contrast, LOSC’s attack has room for improvement: Like their opponents, Lille have only scored four goals.
Only Jonathan David can be credited with a reliable form in the forward play. The Canadian has scored in the last two games and, should he score again, he would be the first player in the history of the five-time French champions to score in three consecutive Champions League games.
David is also a regular in Ligue 1: After 17 league games, the 21-year-old already has 11 goals to his name and he was on target again at the weekend despite playing just 45 minutes. His goal marked the start of a successful comeback against Troyes, which ultimately led to a 2-1 home win.
Next goal by in-form attacker David?
In his second season with Lille, the youngster seems to have fully arrived, having already lived up to expectations in his debut season with a double-digit goal haul.
Given his steady form, picking odds on his next goal celebration in Wolfsburg’s clash against Lille also represents a good idea in the eyes of the betting public.
Furthermore, the 2004 Intertoto Cup winners have now stabilised in league action. They haven’t lost in five rounds and have at least somewhat made up for their poor start to the season.
At least a draw by the “Great Danes”?
With the visitors’ rising form and the home side’s shaky form, the odds on the double chance in Wolfsburg v Lille are additionally worth considering in favour of coach Jocelyn Gourvennec’s side.
The prediction is backed up by their last outing at Sevilla, where the French side scored a 2-1 win to inflict the only home defeat on the Andalusians in the competition so far!
Predicted Lille line-up:
Grbic – Fonte – Djalo – Botman – Mandava – Bamba – Xeka – Andre – Weah – David – Sanchez

Wolfsburg – Lille Direct comparison / H2H-Balance
The first meeting of the “Wolves” and “Great Danes” within the current edition of the Champions League took place almost three months ago and ended goalless. The clubs also faced each other once before in 2014 in the then Europa League. Wolfsburg recorded a 1-1 draw at home and won 3-0 away from home.
Thanks in part to these results, the French side made it through the group stage, but had already reached the end of the line. For the next edition of Wolfsburg vs. Lille, the odds are again slightly favouring the hosts.
Wolfsburg – Lille Tip
Wolfsburg must win, otherwise there is no chance of climbing up the table. With a three-goal win, however, they could even make it into the Champions League for the winter, as the group is particularly well-balanced. For the duel between Wolfsburg and Lille, the tip is less than 2.5 goals.
The first leg was already a draw and the visitors travel with a very strong defence, which has already recorded a clean sheet in three of the five group games. At the same time, the attacking lines on both sides have rarely been convincing.
In view of this, it is not surprising that the visitors have scored a meagre 1.4 goals in their matches and the average in the Wolves’ matches is just as low at 2.2.
Another factor in favour of this prediction is that the visitors can book their ticket to the play-offs in the top flight with a draw, which is why a particularly defensive visiting team can be expected. In addition, Wolfsburg, who are in poor form, do not seem to have the game in hand at the moment to be able to pose a threat to the French side’s strong defence.
Betway offers betting odds of 1.91 on the match between Wolfsburg and Lille.
