For the first time in almost two years, a Derbi Sevillano is played in front of spectators

For the first time since 10 November 2019, a Derbi Sevillano will take place in front of fans. The anticipation on both sides is correspondingly great when it is called El Gran Derbi (in German: das große Derby) at the Estadio Benito Villamarín.

At the same time, both teams are doing really well in La Liga. The Verdiblancos have won three of their last four league games and are in fifth place. Their city rivals and today’s guests are in third place with three points more. Overall, therefore, there are balanced odds available ahead of the Betis Sevilla match.

Generally, the two rivals from the Andalusian capital have their great strength in defensive work. In fact, the Rojiblancos have the best defence in La Liga with only seven goals conceded from eleven games.

Nevertheless, we see a lot of value in betting on Betis Sevilla against Sevilla to score over 2.5 goals. Finally, the return of the fans to the prestigious Derbi Sevillano should make for a heated atmosphere.

Betis Sevilla – Statistics & current form

Real Betis Balompié, Real Betis for short, is based in the Andalusian capital of Seville. The Verdiblancos won the Spanish championship in 1935 and the Copa del Rey twice.

Most recently, however, the Béticos have experienced lean years from time to time. Between 2009 and 2011, as well as in the 2014/15 season, the Andalusians only played in the second division before reaching the Europa League this summer in their first year in charge under Manuel Pellegrini, finishing sixth in the final table.

Six wins among first twelve league games

In the second most important European competition for club teams, however, the Verdiblancos suffered a 4-0 debacle in Leverkusen on Thursday evening. Nonetheless, the Béticos, who took a total of seven points out of a possible twelve, are still on course for the knockout phase.

Now, however, the focus is not only on inflicting another defeat on their arch-rivals in the prestigious Derbi Sevillano. The Pellegrini team also wants to set the course for future international representation with another win. With six wins from their first twelve league games, the Andalusians currently occupy fifth place in the league.

Won only one of the last twelve derbies at home

With a home win over their city rivals, Betis could even draw level on points with the Rojiblancos, although bettors don’t think that very home win is too likely.

The balance sheet is certainly a factor here, as the Verdiblancos have won just one of the last twelve Derbi Sevillanos in La Liga at their home Estadio Benito Villamarín alone (seven draws, four defeats).

Sevilla – Statistics & current form

Sevilla FC, just like city rivals Real Betis, have also been Spanish champions exactly once. The Rojiblancos took the title for the first and only time eleven years after the Béticos’ triumph in 1946.

Overall, the Nervionenses are nevertheless the much more successful club, clearly leading the way in Andalusia in terms of titles. In addition to their five Copa del Rey victories, they have won six Europa League trophies, with Sevilla FC the record winners.

Only one defeat among the first eleven league games

Currently, however, Julen Lopetegui’s men are competing in the Champions League, where they have yet to win in four group games. After three draws in a row at the start, they recently suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Lille OSC, which means that the Rojiblancos are not going into the Derbi Sevillano with the utmost confidence.

At least in league play, however, the Nervionenses have had very little to burn. The Andalusians have only lost one of their eleven league games. However, that defeat has been a tough one, dating back to an away game in Andalusia, of all places, when they were beaten 1-0 by Granada CF in the other Andalusian derby on 3 October 2021.

The best defence in La Liga

Even with this in mind, it is definitely not a no-brainer to bet on Betis Sevilla against Sevilla to win a point or even an away win for the supposedly favoured Rojiblancos, who have in fact only managed to win three of their last eight competitive games (three draws, two defeats).

The defence, which has conceded only seven goals in eleven league games so far (best in La Liga), has been very stable for the most part. But precisely because the spectators are finally back in the game at “El Gran Derbi” after three ghost match derbies, it could well be a goal-filled affair.

Betis Sevilla – Sevilla Direct Comparison / H2H Balance

Head to head: 39 – 32 – 63

The Derbi Sevillano has been played 134 times so far and with 63 victories, almost half of all duels have gone to the Rojiblancos, who also celebrated a 1-0 home victory in their last encounter to date on 14 March 2021. Sevilla FC are currently unbeaten against the Béticos for five league games in a row (four wins, one draw).

Betis Sevilla – Sevilla tip

When it comes to Betis Sevilla vs Sevilla, the prediction must not put too much stock in the “head to head” comparison. After all, the home fans in Andalusia could well become the decisive factor that pushes the Verdiblancos, who have been playing strongly in fifth place in the league so far, accordingly. Sevilla FC’s recent record of just three wins in their last eight competitive matches shows that they have not been successful in everything they have done.

In our opinion, it makes sense to bet on a high-scoring affair in this potentially very heated prestige duel between two hated city rivals. We therefore recommend betting on more than 2.5 goals.
