Will the 49ers suffer their fourth defeat in a row?
The Sunday Night Game is shaping up to be an absolute hopeful this NFL week. The 49ers are at 2:3 wins, the Colts even only at a 2:4 record. So losing is a no-no on Sunday and that goes for both teams.
For the loser of this game we see black as far as a successful playoff qualification is concerned. The 49ers, who play in the strongest division in the league, are already four wins behind leader Arizona. With five wins behind, the train has definitely left the station.
The Colts are still lucky that their AFC South is one of the weaker divisions and they are only two wins behind a direct playoff ticket. Their recent performances have also been promising.
They won clearly against the Dolphins and Texans and lost only very unluckily against the strong Ravens. For 49ers vs. Colts, our forecast is therefore a slight favourite position of Indianapolis, who are simply in better shape.
Kickoff of the Sunday Night Game of NFL Week 7 is on Monday night at 02:20 and the game will be broadcast live on DAZN with German commentary.
San Francisco 49ers – Statistics & current form
A 2:3 record – plus three straight losses and a banged up Jimmy Garoppolo. There’s a lot going on against San Francisco these weeks and we don’t see much that promises to change the trend on Sunday either.
There’s a lot of discussion on social media right now about which quarterback should get the nod on Sunday. The traditionalists are in favour of Garoppolo, but many believe the time for a definitive change has already come.
Is Trey Lance already a starting quarterback?
What speaks against Lance is certainly his mediocre performance against the Arizona Cardinals, when he remained without a touchdown and achieved only 193 yards through the air. Even his good 89 rushing yards can’t hide that.
With a passer rating of 88.4, he is also a few points behind Garoppolo (96.9). Nevertheless, the change will have to be made at some point and it might make sense to do so already this season, especially since the playoffs are a long way off.
Injury worries continue
While the 49ers were the team with the most injury woes in 2020, they are coming up short again this season. In addition to the banged-up Garoppolo, five offensive players – Hasty, James, Hurt, Skule and Kittle – have landed on the IR list recently alone.
With five players also missing from the defence (including Dre Greenlaw), the conditions for San Francisco are once again not the best. Because the Colts are much deeper here, a bet on Indy is our favourite betting option for 49ers vs Colts.
Key Players:
QB: Jimmy Garoppolo
RB: Eli Mitchell
WR: Deebo Samuel
TE: Ross Dwelley
K: Robbie Gould
Indianapolis Colts – stats & current form
The Colts are finally on track. While they are still only 2-4, their performances suggest that they will soon have a positive record. However, it is questionable whether this will be enough to pass Tennessee.
So every win counts. Against a struggling 49ers team, they should be able to make a start, because their defence has been improving from game to game lately. Finally, against Houston, they allowed only three measly points.
Both offenses on par
So defensively we see Indianapolis slightly ahead, offensively it’s a head-to-head duel. Only 0.7 yards separate the two teams so far this season. The 49ers are 2.9 yards ahead in the passing game, the Colts 2.2 in the running game.
San Francisco’s favouritism is therefore not apparent to us statistically, and so the odds on the Colts are much more promising in 49ers vs Colts. Especially since Indy also has fewer injury concerns at key positions.
Carson Wentz back at 100%
The status of quarterback Carson Wentz, who had to play with two cracked ankles in the previous weeks, is certainly important in this context. In the meantime, however, his problems have been overcome, which is also reflected in his performance.
In the last three games he has 853 yards, six touchdowns and not a single interception. That clearly puts him in the pocket of both possible 49ers quarterbacks. For us, the final piece of the puzzle to go with the Colts as winners on Sunday.
Key Players:
QB: Carson Wentz
RB: Jonathan Taylor
WR: Michael Pittman Jr.
TE: Jack Doyle
K: Rodrigo Blankenship
San Francisco 49ers – Indianapolis Colts Head-to-head comparison / H2H record
The head-to-head record also supports our thesis of a slight Colts advantage. The last four duels all went to Indianapolis, even if it went into overtime in the last meeting.
They have also been the better team in recent weeks. While the 49ers are 0-3 in their last three games, the Colts have a 2-1 record over that span, which makes the 49ers’ bye week less of a factor.
For San Francisco vs. Indianapolis, the betting odds on the Colts are also slightly higher, as the betting providers see them as underdogs. Other than the bye week and home field advantage, however, there’s little in the 49ers’ favour, which is why we don’t share this view.
San Francisco 49ers – Indianapolis Colts Tip
Offensively both teams are statistically almost equal, but defensively the Colts allow two points less per game. We simply have to agree with the stats here and therefore see Indy as the slight favourites.
This, in turn, makes betting on them an obvious proposition. For 49ers vs. Colts, a tip on Indianapolis +4 is an easy bet to take. We even recommend pure win bets on Indy, which brings the value up to 2.80.
On the other hand, over-point bets are a perfect alternative. The set 43-44 points should be exceeded in any case. After all, both teams score over 23 points on average per game.
