Manuel Neuer scores three in Lisbon
It’s another reflection of his outstanding ability. Manuel Neuer will be in the box for Bayern Munich for the 100th time in the Champions League at Lisbon’s Estadio da Luz on Wednesday. Such an anniversary should ideally be celebrated with a win and the betting companies assume that there is not much to say against it in FC Bayern’s guest game at Benfica Lisbon.
Manuel Neuer will have the support of world footballer Robert Lewandowski. No player has scored more goals against Portuguese clubs in the Champions League than the Pole. Because the latter has basically been playing above ground for years, we can well imagine that the centre-forward will be successful again on Wednesday in the Portuguese capital.
In the table of this group, FC Bayern is at the top with six points and 8:0 goals after two match days. Benfica follow in second place with four points. Dynamo Kiev are on one point and FC Barcelona, who are only a shadow of their former selves this year, are still without a point. Based on the standings, the prediction between Benfica Lisbon and Bayern Munich has to go to a guest victory.
We wouldn’t bet on a home win at least, as the Lisbon Eagles have yet to win at all against the German record champions. The current condition of both teams gives little reason for Portuguese optimism.
Benfica – Statistics & current form
Basically, it’s business as usual for the Eagles. In the Portuguese league, Benfica is currently at the top of the standings. However, the two pursuers Porto and Sporting are only one point away. This year, too, there will be a three-way fight for the national title. So Jorge Jesus does not have the opportunity to put the national tasks behind those in the Champions League.
Form crunch for the Eagles
Overall, Benfica have lost just one of 15 competitive games this season across all competitions. However, things are not going well around the last international break. First there was a sensational league defeat at home against Portimonense, before they only prevailed in extra time in the cup at Trofense.
Everton gave Jorge Jesus’ team a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. In the 80th minute, however, the second division side levelled the score at 1-1 and it was not until extra time that Andre Almeida scored the 2-1 winner for the Eagles. If the Portuguese continue to show such form on Wednesday, then you might want to check the odds on a handicap win for the German champions between Benfica Lisbon and Bayern Munich.
Personally, there will be plenty of changes compared to the narrow victory in the cup. In the construction industry, one would speak of hardly leaving one stone upon another. Seven to eight changes are to be expected. Among others, Julian Weigl is likely to move into the starting eleven. Only the two former Bundesliga players Haris Seferovic and Valentino Lazaro should not be in the match.
Predicted Benfica line-up:
Vlachodimos – Otamendi, Vertonghen, Verissimo – Weigl – Grimaldo, Rafa Silva, Joao Mario, Pizzi – Yaremchuk, Nunez – Coach: Jesus

Bayern – Statistics & current form
Bayern are a very hot property in the Champions League. Despite all the investors who generously push other clubs financially, Bayern Munich is one of the favourites to win the Champions League. Especially away from home, the Munich team has put together an impressive series in the top flight.
Bavarian away power
The German record champions have not lost in the Champions League in their last 19 away games (15 wins, four draws). Bayern have been undefeated away from home in this competition for over four years. Against this background, we cannot avoid predicting a success for the visitors in the duel between Benfica Lisbon and Bayern.
The Bavarians have allowed themselves a tiny period of weakness before the international matches and lost against Frankfurt in the Bundesliga. On the other hand, there was another gala in the top match at Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend. After goals by Robert Lewandowski (2), Serge Gnabry (2) and Thomas Müller, the score was already 5:0 at the break. In the second period, the Werkself only managed to cosmetically improve the result to a final score of 5:1 for the FCB.
Lucas Hernandez, in particular, is a mystery in the line-up. The Frenchman may have to serve a prison sentence in Spain. On Wednesday, however, he will probably replace Dayot Upamecano in the starting eleven. Marc Roca, Corentin Tolisso and substitute keeper Sven Ulreich will certainly not be in the starting line-up.
Predicted Bayern line-up:
Neuer – Pavard, Süle, Hernandez, Davies – Kimmich, Goretzka – Gnabry, Müller, Sane – Lewandowski – Coach: Nagelsmann

Benfica – Bayern Direct Comparison / H2H Balance
When you are national champions so often, it is almost inevitable that you will run into each other in the European Cup of Nations and the Champions League. In total, Benfica Lisbon and Bayern Munich faced each other in ten matches. The Portuguese did not manage a single victory.
The Bavarians were successful seven times, and three times they parted with a draw. Excitingly, in three out of five years, the Munich team ended up in the final of the competition after playing against Benfica. The most recent duel was in the 2018/19 season, with the Munich side winning 2-0 in Lisbon in the group stage of the top flight and going on to win 5-1 at home.
Benfica – Bayern Tip
Benfica Lisbon is a hot candidate for the round of 16 after the weaknesses shown by Barcelona. Bayern, however, should be out of their league. In ten direct duels, the Portuguese have never won against the German record champions. Therefore, we do not expect the Eagles to celebrate a victory on Wednesday.
In addition, the Munich team has not lost an away match in the top flight for four years and has won 15 and drawn four of its 19 games. It sounds more than clear that betting on a win for the visitors in this group match between Benfica Lisbon and Bayern Munich is the best choice.
With a win in Portugal, the Munich side would almost be through to the last 16. Julian Nagelsmann will not want to let this chance slip away and Robert Lewandowski will do everything he can to improve his goal tally against Portuguese clubs. That’s why we’re playing the betting odds on a handicap win (-1.5) for the Germans in the clash between Benfica Lisbon and Bayern
