Set a 131-year-old record for the Sky Blues ?
For 131 years now, one very special record has been untouchable in England: the record of AFC Sunderland, who between 1890 and 1892 won a total of 24 consecutive home games in the country’s top division. The Sky Blues currently have 23 consecutive home wins in all competitions. If the prediction of a Manchester City ‚Citizens‘ home win against Liverpool comes true, this old record will officially be broken
The fact that the reigning treble winners have lost just one of their last 14 Premier League home games against the Reds (eight wins, five draws) speaks in their favour. However, Jurgen Klopp’s team will travel to the game in good form. LFC have lost just one of their last 23 Premier League games (15 wins, seven draws). That means the Sky Blues‘ home win against Liverpool is by no means a foregone conclusion
The two coaches of the two teams, who now face each other for the 29th time in their careers, are naturally also in the spotlight. Klopp’s team has won eleven times and Guardiola’s ten times. In both cases, no other coach in the world can boast more wins against the German or the Spaniard, who can therefore call each other their sworn enemies
Manchester City – stats & current form
Manchester City had an absolutely outstanding season last season. In addition to winning the ninth English Champions League title in the club’s history and the seventh aggregate win in the FA Cup, the Sky Blues secured UEFA Champions League participation for the first time ever.
As reigning treble winners, the Citizens now face the incredible challenge of building on those successes. So far, however, the 2023/24 season has also been very successful for Pep Guardiola’s team, who not only lead the Premier League but have also secured a ticket to the Round of 16 in the top flight of the competition in advance.
They have won all of their last 23 home games
However, the Sky Blues have failed to win three of their last six Premier League games (three wins, one draw and two defeats). That’s the same number of games without a win as in the previous 23 Premier League games (20 wins, two draws, one defeat). As a result, the lead in the table is somewhat shaky.
With 28 out of 36 possible points the „citizens“ are in first place, but they are only one point ahead of Liverpool and Arsenal. If Manchester City’s bid for a historic 24th consecutive home win against Liverpool doesn’t pan out, the Reds or the Gunners, or maybe even both teams, could overtake Guardiola’s team
Lost just one of last 14 Premier League home games against Liverpool
The incredible home form of the reigning treble winners isn’t the only thing in their favour, however, as they have lost just one of their last 14 Premier League home games against LFC (eight wins, five draws).
However, the injury that superstar Erling Haaland picked up during the international break is a clear minus. The Norwegian has now scored 49 times in 47 Premier League games for the Sky Blues and could soon break Andrew Cole’s record for the fastest 50 goals scored in the Premier League (65 games), but is out for the all-important clash at the top of the standings against the Reds.
Manchester City’s predicted line-up:
Liverpool – stats and current form
Jürgen Klopp has been in charge of Liverpool FC for eight years now. Since then, there have been groundbreaking successes such as the Champions League in 2019, the league title in 2020 and winning the FA Cup in 2022. Last season, however, the Reds failed to achieve too much success.
For long periods, LFC even had to fear for their participation in the European tournament. In the end, the „squashers“ finished fifth in the final standings and still qualified for the Europa League
Only one defeat in the last 23 Premier League games
At the start of the new season, everyone involved should be even more reassured that the focus is once again on the top. After twelve league games, of which Liverpool have lost only one (eight wins, three draws), the team from the port city is second in the table. They are only one point behind the Sky Blues.
If the team from Merseyside achieves a win as an away to the reigning trophy winners, LFC will overtake Guardiola’s team in the table. However, the odds are against the ‚Squires‘ in the Manchester City – Liverpool match, even though Klopp’s team has lost just one of their last 23 Premier League games (15 wins, 7 draws)
Eleven of the last twelve Premier League defeats have come away from home
The reason for this is the fact that Liverpool are particularly vulnerable away from home. They have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last seven Premier League away games. The Reds have even remained winless in their last three games away from home (two draws, one defeat), losing 3-2 at Toulouse after three wins in the Europa League first round.
In fact, eleven of the last twelve defeats suffered by the Magpies in the Premier League have been away. The visit of the leaders will be correspondingly complicated, although LFC have at least taken the lead in two of their last three away games to the Sky Blues.
Liverpool’s predicted line-up:
Manchester City vs Liverpool comparison / H2H result
Head to head: 60 – 56 – 108
There have been a total of 224 meetings between the two teams so far and with 108 wins Liverpool FC have won almost half of them. Most recently, however, the Citizens celebrated two consecutive victories against the Reds, who were also beaten 4-1 in their last Premier League home game on 1 April 2023. However, these were Manchester City’s only two wins in their last seven meetings (two draws, three defeats).
Manchester City – Liverpool betting tip
According to the clear comparison of sports betting odds, the odds for Manchester City vs Liverpool favour the strong at home Citizens, who can now win their 24th consecutive home game in all competitions. However, without Erling Haaland, who suffered an ankle injury during the international break, the task will be very difficult, especially considering the Reds are in good form and have lost just one of their last 23 Premier League games (15 wins, 7 draws).
Furthermore, LFC have opened the scoring in two of their last three away games against the Sky Blues, although ultimately neither of the two games were won (1-1 and 1-4). This makes the prediction that both teams will score again in the Manchester City – Liverpool match even more consistent
