Will BVB storm Union into the ground?
On Matchday 5 of the Bundesliga, Union Berlin face a really tough away trip. The Eisernen host Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park on Sunday at 17:30 – a really tough game given BVB’s form.
Dortmund, for their part, have picked up two important and impressive wins this week in the Bundesliga and Champions League, in which the attacking department in particular made a splash.
No wonder that the odds clearly favour the home side in Dortmund vs. Union Berlin. To make matters worse for the Union side, they were in action in the UEFA Europa Conference League at the weekend – and didn’t have any success there either.
Looking at BVB’s form, their enthusiasm for the game and their strength in recent matches, there is a lot to be said in favour of betting on BVB in Dortmund vs.
Even though Union is still undefeated this season, it is rather difficult to imagine that this series will continue after the difficult guest game at Signal Iduna Park.
Germany Borussia Dortmund – Statistics & current form
At least offensively, BVB played two really impressive games this week. In the turbulent and high-class 4:3 away win in Leverkusen on Matchday 4, Dortmund once again showed what they are capable of, defensively and offensively.
At the back, Marco Rose’s team is always good for a goal or two, but at the front they have so much firepower that they can really pose problems for any opponent.
Especially Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham have been in excellent form lately, as they proved in Istanbul a few days later. In the Champions League, BVB won 2-1 at Besiktas and recorded the next important victory in a tough away game.
BVB impress at Besiktas
Bellingham and Haaland scored BVB’s opening win in the top flight. Here too, however, the result could have been very different, much higher. Dortmund again had a multitude of scoring chances, only this time they were extremely wasteful with them. Instead of leading 4:0 at some point, they suddenly conceded the almost obligatory goal shortly before the end.
All this does not bode well for the Unioners on Sunday. Dortmund’s strong form coupled with the home advantage ensures that we tend to bet on a home win for Borussia Dortmund vs. Union Berlin. In the simple three-way, this is admittedly not particularly lucrative, here the betting providers give only a 1.38 average.
Things get more interesting if BVB, who are so often shaky at the back, win but concede a goal in the process.
Predicted line-up of Borussia Dortmund:
Kobel – Meunier, Akanji, Hummels, Guerreiro – Witsel – Bellingham, Brandt – Reus – Malen, Haaland.

Germany Union Berlin – Statistics & current form
For their part, Union have started the season anything but badly. Even in their third year in the Bundesliga, the Köpenickers are showing how well they can compete and how difficult they are to defeat.
Union Berlin is only one of four teams still undefeated after four matchdays. The fact that it is “only” enough for 8th place is, of course, due to the many draws – Union itself won only one of the games and drew three times.
The most disappointing draw was certainly the one on the last matchday at home against FC Augsburg, when they, as the favoured team, could not get beyond a 0:0. Even more disappointing was the match on Thursday evening in the Conference League. Union started their third UEFA European competition with a defeat, losing 3-1 at Slavia Prague on matchday 1.
How does Union react to opening defeat in Conference League?
Union came back from a goal down to equalise while playing shorthanded, but a double strike from Slavia sealed their opening defeat in the Czech capital shortly before the end. Now, just three days later, the tough trip to Dortmund is on the agenda.
The betting odds for Borussia Dortmund vs. Union Berlin already indicate that Union is the clear underdog. The odds on a Union away win are 8.00, and the odds on a draw are also over 5.00.
So the bookmakers don’t really have much confidence in Eisern Union against a strongly performing BVB – understandably so. Given the current form of both teams, it is also hard for us to imagine Union taking anything worthwhile away from Signal Iduna Park.
Predicted line-up of Union Berlin:
Luthe – Friedrich, Knoche, Baumgartl – Ryerson, R. Khedira, Gießelmann – Öztunali, Haraguchi – Becker – Awoniyi

Home win as a clear thing? The history clearly says: Yes! There have been four Bundesliga duels between the two clubs so far, with four home victories. BVB won 5:0 and 2:0 at home, Union beat BVB 3:1 and 2:1 in their home stadium.
So far, the Köpenicker have never scored in their two Bundesliga matches at Signal Iduna Park. But the signs are not bad that this will change. BVB have already conceded nine goals – the highest number of goals conceded after four games since the 1991/92 season. Only Hertha and Fürth have currently conceded more goals than BVB (11).

Awesome at the front, foul at the back: That is currently the case for coach Marco Rose’s stormy Borussia. BVB has scored the most goals so far, but also conceded the second most. Only once in its Bundesliga history has BVB been more accurate up front (2015/16) and more vulnerable at the back (1991/92).
That promises some entertainment against Union as well – with the better outcome for BVB, or so we believe.
The Black and Yellows are so good offensively that we can’t imagine anything but a home win against Union. But since the Borussians are always good at conceding goals at the back, our prediction for Dortmund against Union is: BVB wins and both score
